Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG)
Roha Health’s mission is first and foremost to provide affordable, high-quality healthcare to its patients. Our ESG philosophy is to create a surplus of good to communities as well as the natural, social, and governance systems we operate in, supporting healthy lives, while also mitigating the negative impacts of providing healthcare services. Specifically, Roha is working towards a net zero emission campus, anchored around an urban forest with 12,000 trees we planted, providing public good and high user experience, while future proofing the campus to provide long-term value to our stakeholders. Roha’s campus will be an efficient, healing environment for its patients, visitors, and staff.
Our ESG Objectives
- Construct and operate a net zero-emissioncampus
- Develop a green campus that enhances biodiversity, improves air quality, and conserves indigenous trees
- Recruit diverse talent, paying close attention to gender equity, language, age, and ability, and fostering a supportive environment to maintain diversity
- Engage employees on fraud, anti-corruption, and anti-bribery trainings
- Provision of needs-based no-cost medical service to bridge the healthcare gap in society for those who can’t afford it
- Supporting the wider community of the campus through Roha’s charitable foundation with knowledge and skills transfer, job creation, food security, and health education
Healing Environment at Roha Medical Campus
Roha Medical Campus is carbon-neutral and has a park with over 12,000 native trees planted using the Miyawaki forest creation method. This park profoundly augments the natural healing environment we are creating for our patients, their families, and our staff. The forest will not only offset carbon emissions but also provide crucial ecosystem services of flood mitigation, biodiversity, and air quality improvements to the campus and its surroundings. The campus embodies an environmentally friendly concept, implementing an advanced waste management system with clean technologies, as well as wastewater and water treatment plant; these are uncommon for the region and often challenging to accomplish. In addition, the campus will be built according to green principles and aims to achieve IFC’s EDGE certification for green building standards.
Environmental and Social Management System
Roha Medical Campus’ Environmental and Social Management System is composed of policies, procedures, monitoring, and reporting. We adhere to the guidelines of African Development Bank’s Integrated Safeguards System and of IFC Performance Standards on Environmental and Social Sustainability. The Project conducted an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and was given national environmental clearance from the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) Environmental Protection Authority.
